Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test Guidelines

All students applying for admission to a Wisconsin professional educator preparation program must complete and pass the Praxis I - Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Listed below is information about this assessment:

  • All students planning to enroll in their initial professional educator (licensure) program at Wisconsin colleges, universities or alternative programs are required to pass the Praxis I: PPST.
  • Consult your institution of higher education as you prepare for this test to determine all of the institutional guidelines and assistance that may be provided for this test.
  • Tests are usually taken during the first or second year of undergraduate work depending on the institution of higher education's policies.
  • Teachers applying for licenses in Wisconsin, who complete professional educator preparation programs after August 31, 1992 at colleges and universities in other states, are required to submit to the DPI passing scores on Praxis I or equivalent basic skills tests required by professional educator preparation programs or states.
  • The Praxis I: PPST consists of two versions - the computer-based test and the paper and pencil test. The computer-based tests are offered by appointment through a national network of Prometric Testing Centers (located at most Sylvan Learning Centers), selected institutional sites, and Educational Testing Services Field Service Offices. Visit Computer Based Testing on the ETS site for locations near you. For paper and pencil test centers and dates, refer to the Praxis Registration web site.

For more information on the two versions of the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test, see the PPST Chart. MS Word document
