Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction - Professional Library


Welcome to the Professional Library of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. We are the Department's center for information and referral on education and library science topics. The Professional Library is designed to serve the needs of DPI staff, but the public is also welcome. The Library responds to telephone, mail, electronic and other inquiries for information.

Library Location and Hours of Service

The DPI Professional Library is located in room 311 of the GEF 3 building:

The Library is open from 8a.m. to 4p.m., Monday through Friday

Library Services

The Collection

The library houses a collection of professional education and library science books, reference materials, journals and newsletters, as well as telephone directories from Wisconsin communities. The following lists contain the Library's periodical holdings:

ERIC Documents

ERIC is a national information system providing access to education-related literature. The complete 300,000 item ERIC microfiche document collection and a microfiche reader-printer are available.

Computer Databases

In addition to providing Internet access, the library subscribes to over 300 databases, which contain educational, psychological, medical, legal and general information.

Reference Services

The DPI Professional Library provides a full range of reference services, from in-depth database searching to quick answers to your questions. Computer literature searches are also conducted for DPI staff. Reference questions may be directed to Kay Ihlenfeldt at (608) 266-3108.

Lending

Library materials, books and periodicals, may be borrowed for up to 4 weeks. Renewal is possible, and extended loans can also be arranged. Please contact Kay Ihlenfeldt at (608) 266-3108 for more information regarding the library's loan policies.

Reference and Loan Library (RLL)
The Reference and Loan Library, which is operated by DPI, is a state-level clearinghouse for interlibrary loan and reference requests received from Wisconsin libraries of all types. Please contact Martha Farley for more information.
Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning (DLTCL)
The DLTCL is a unit within the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The DPI Professional Library is part of the DLTCL division of DPI.
Education Resources Information Center (ERIC)
ERIC has created a new service, Educator's Reference Desk, which provides access to lesson plans, online education information and question archive responses. It also provides a search interface to the ERIC database. The DPI Professional Library is an ERIC Resource Collection.
MadCat
MadCat is the online catalog of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It may be accessed through the UW's Electronic Library.
The Center for Instructional Materials and Computing (CIMC)
The CIMC is the library for the School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
